back washing catalytic carbon filtersthere are two main types of units
activated and catalytic units.
The activated is great at removing chlorine from the water typically on city water. It can also improve the taste smell and odor of the water.
Catalytic like activated can remove chlorine from the water as well as help with taste smell and odor. But it can also remove chloramines and hydrogen sulfide (the rotten egg smell from the water).
There are two main types of systems
upflow non back washing units & back washing units.
The first type the up flow model is great for water that is free of sediment and iron (or anything that could clog up the system) which is typical city water. The up flow models typically uses the Clack Up Flow valve. Because carbon mainly works by absorption and back wash is not necessary unless there are particles that could clog the media up. A back washing unit is usually recommended for well water.
The second type is the back washing style which typically uses the Fleck or Duraline style control valve. This is great for well water with iron or other minerals that could clog up the system.
A lot of people consider these systems as a polisher of the water to help with that clarity, taste and odor. That is why carbon is being put in filters for the refrigerator, on the kitchen sink or even in some water containers. They are also one of the primary elements in a reverse osmosis system. Because of that having a whole house system can really cut down on having to replace the smaller ones on your refrigerator, sink or water container and enjoy that great quality polished water throughout the whole home.
